A male elephant was killed and a man badly hurt when an interprovincial bus rammed into it in Hang Chat district late Friday night. All passengers on board the bus were unhurt.The Bangkok-Chiang Mai air-conditioned bus, carrying 25 passengers, were travelling on Lampang-Chiang Mai route when it hit the pachyderm walking on the road near Khun Tan hill in Hang Chat district at around 10pm on Friday, said police. The bus was operated by state-run Transport Co.The force of the crash killed the elephant on the spot. Bus driver Narit Jittrong, 45, was badly injured and trapped in the driver’s seat.Rescue workers took more than one hour to extricate the driver from the wreckage. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, while other passengers on board were not injured.Pet elephant crushed to death by bus on Lampang-Chiang Mai highway A pet bull elephant died and a bus driver was critically injured after it was hit by a Bangkok-Chiang Mai bus on the Lampang-Chiang Mai highway late last night.The incident happened at a slope section of the highway near the Khun Tarn highway service centre in Tambon Wiang Tarn of Hang Chat district, Lampang province.The bus with about 20 passengers arrived at the scene at about 10 pm at the same time when the elephant unexpectedly came out of the roadside and crossed the road.The jumbo was directly hit with its body crushed beneath the front wheels. It died instantly.The bus driver identified later as Narit Chittong, 45, was critically injured and trapped in his seat.Rescuers were alerted and helped to helped him out and admitted to hospital.No passengers were injured.According to police, the pet elephant might have escaped from its camp and wander out to the road.As it was dark at the scene, the driver might not notice it.The police were looking for the owner of the elephant for questioning Bus driver seriously hurt as wild elephant killed in accident A wild elephant died in Lampang province after being hit by a bus travelling from Bangkok to Chiang Mai on Friday night, leaving the driver with serious injuries.None of the 25 passengers aboard the bus was hurt.It is believed the male elephant died instantly, while the bus driver, Narit Jitthrong, was transferred to a hospital.The daily duty officer of Hang Chat Police Station, Captain Wiroj Saeng-eiam, who reported the accident on Chiang Mai-Lampang Rd, said the elephant had escaped from the Doi Phamueang Wildlife Sanctuary.The animal belonged to the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation, and had been released into the wild. Wildlife sanctuary officers collected the carcass.Friends of the Asian Elephant Foundation secretary-general Soraida Salwala said: "I would like to ask the relevant agencies to figure how to prevent such an accident occurring again.
